Roll-width selection
Pick a width that covers your largest single panel without a horizontal seam. 54″ covers most cars and partial wraps; 60″ is the wrap-industry default for vans and small trucks; 72″ is for tall vehicles like box trucks, buses, and food trucks.
Methodology: coverage areas come from Surface’s wrap template database. Waste factors reflect industry-typical material loss on each coverage class. Real waste depends on installer skill, panel layout decisions, and how aggressively you reuse offcuts.
Methodology
How the numbers are calculated
Coverage area
Per-vehicle coverage areas come from Surface’s wrap template database — actual measured panel areas for each vehicle. Full wrap means every paintable exterior surface; three-quarter excludes the roof; half excludes roof and hood; partial covers select panels (typically sides and rear); decals are logos and lettering only.
Waste factor
Industry-typical waste percentages: 20% for full wraps (compound curves, recovery zones, mistakes), 18% for three-quarter, 15% for half wraps, 12% for partial, 10% for decals. A skilled installer with a clean panel layout can hit lower — but always order to the higher number. Reordering material delays an install by days or weeks.
Roll yardage
Calculated from required vinyl area divided by roll width, converted to linear yards. Most wrap-grade material ships in 50-yard rolls; the calculator rounds up to the nearest full roll because partial rolls aren’t a thing in practice.
Laminate
Laminate area is calculated as vinyl area plus 5% to account for application overlap and trim. For warranty purposes, match the laminate manufacturer to the vinyl manufacturer (3M with 3M, Avery with Avery) — mixing voids the MCS / ICS warranty.
What this calculator doesn’t cover
Custom coverage configurations (e.g. wrapping only the cab on a truck), reflective vinyl for safety regulations, perforated window film (different math — typically 50% of window area), and custom-cut shapes. For unusual jobs, run the math by hand using the panel-by-panel measurements your template library provides.
